"Novices" are portraits of young people, partly in ecclesiastical vestments. Despite their innocent appearance, their angelic poses seem confusingly seductive in all their purity. The photos are characterised by a sternness and simplicity reminiscent of icons. The medium of photography produces its own aura here through a shadowless light. The figures appear in a moment of release; their faces appear scrubbed by light, without reference to place or time.
Monika Czosnowska, (born in 1977). A graduate of Essen University, Faculty of Photography. Winner of "Erasmus" and "Artists House Luke" scholarships. Lives and works in Cologne. In addition to her solo-projects, she has participated in group-projects exhibited in Poland as well as abroad.
