Tartakover's recent series, I'm Here, further reinforces the gaze that insists on seeing and responding: in view of the surging violence of the second Intifada and the growing social tensions in Israeli society in recent years, he inserted his own image, in a shiny outfit bearing the inscription "artist," into multiparticipant photographic scenes of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, strikes and catastrophes. The series is not only a declaration of civil presence, but also the testimony of an "artist" who goes out of his studio and puts himself at the very heart of the turbulent reality. Tartakover has created the figure of a designer who operates as a full-fledged artist in Israeli culture - one who does not await a design commission, but rather goes out to the street to react and convey his message. Tartakover's quintessential reaction is straightforward, aiming its arrows at the heart of darkness.

David Tartakover . Born Israel 1944. Lives and works in Tel Aviv. Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, where he has lectured since 1976. Graduate of the London College of Printing. Member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). Israel Prize Laureate (2002).
